Kinship Community Food Center is recruiting a full-time farm apprentice to be part of our team! Paid training and experience in Urban Agriculture and Farming is available for the right candidate who is looking to pursue a career in related fields.

The Kinship Urban Farm is a 27,000 square foot high tunnel vegetable farm located at Maglio Companies in Glendale. The Urban Farm Scholar Apprentice, a newly created position, will participate in and learn about daily operations and farm activities, farming concepts and skills from seed to fruit, assessing and addressing infrastructure needs, updating site facilities, and making improvements to promote the sustainability and efficiency of the urban farm.

Our Mission

Kinship Community Food Center engages volunteers and neighborhood residents to end hunger, isolation, and poverty. Kinship works to 1) nourish food security and wellness, 2) foster belonging and community engagement and 3) create stability & economic opportunity for thousands of residents on Milwaukee’s northside. Our fresh food market, urban farm, and collaborative meals expand food access while teaching healthful habits and skills in a community of belonging where crisis assistance and mentoring is made available. Offering a healing focused workforce program for individuals who currently shop and/or volunteer at our center and/or are receiving crisis and mentoring assistance is a critical step toward our goal of creating stability and economic opportunity for those we have the privilege to accompany.

Position Responsibilities

• Assist in and learn about management and operations of the urban farm, the native prairie, composting, raised garden beds, and lawn and miscellaneous site care
• Assist in and learn about farm facilities and infrastructure such as hoop houses, irrigation systems, and farming tools and equipment
• Assist in and learn about seeding and transplanting various crops throughout the growing season
• Position is 30-40 hours per week

Desired Qualifications

• Receptiveness to overall servant leader model and mission of Kinship
• Tuesday – Saturday work week, including occasional evenings
• Highly motivated & self-directed with a positive attitude
• Interest in urban agriculture
• Demonstrated organizational, collaborative, interpersonal, and written & verbal communication skills
• Microsoft Office experience (preferred), willing to train.
• Openness to work within a Christian/Catholic faith-based environment based on social justice principles
• Willingness to learn and try new things

Working Conditions:

Work Location: Outside at the urban farm and occasionally inside in an open office workspace with an active team atmosphere.

Physical Requirements: Endurance to work outdoors throughout the seasons; ability to lift 70 pounds; work properly and safely with conventional power tools and equipment. Standing and sitting for prolonged periods. Typing on a computer keyboard.

Equipment Used: Chainsaw, weed whip/ string trimmer, brush & lawn mower, power tiller and other gardening tools; computer, printer/copier; utility vehicle.
